Sikh Stories that Shape Britain

■ About the Archive

Crossing Borders

- Sikh Stories That Shape Britain

A living archive of the people, places and stories that reveal the Sikh experience in Britain.
For generations, Sikh communities have contributed to the life of Britain through work, enterprise, activism, faith, service and everyday acts of community. Their stories are part of the country's history, yet many remain held in family photographs, personal memories and community archives rather than the wider historical record.
■ A STORY STILL BEING TOLD

Rooted in faith. United by community. Carried across generations. Honouring the journeys, sacrifices, and achievements of Sikhs who crossed borders, built communities, and helped shape Britain, so their stories are never forgotten.

■ What We Preserve

The People Behind The History

- History Has a Human Voice

For centuries, Sikh lives and British history have intersected across borders, cultures, and generations. From the earliest Sikh connections with Britain to the communities established across the country today, Sikhs have contributed to and helped shape Britain’s social, cultural, political and economic life.

Crossing Borders: Sikh Stories that Shape Britain brings this rich and often overlooked history into the foreground. Through oral histories, archival research, digitisation and community partnerships, we uncover untold stories, preserve lived experiences and celebrate the people whose journeys have shape both community and country.
By creating an accessible living archive, we ensure that these histories are recognised as an integral part of Britain’s shared story, connecting generations, strengthening cultural identity and preserving a remarkable legacy for the future.

From Arrival To Contribution

Wolverhampton, 1963
The Dhaliwal Family
Narinder arrived with twelve pounds in his pocket and a letter of work from the steel foundry. He never imagined his grandchildren would one day run it.
Southall, West London, 1970s
A Village in the City
Southall became a living Punjab - Punjabi signs on every shopfront, Bhangra from open windows, the smell of langar halfway down the High Street.
Bradford, 1978
Kaur & the Classroom
Simran was told to anglicize her name on her first day. She refused. Sixty years later, she taught Punjabi to three hundred Bradford children.

Perhaps it is a faded photograph tucked away in a family album. A letter sent between Punjab and Britain. The story of a first journey, a new home, a family business, a place of worship, or a memory shared around the dinner table.
‍
These personal moments form part of a much bigger story, the story of Sikhs who crossed borders, overcame challenges, built communities, transformed lives, and helped shape Britain.
Share your story with Crossing Borders. What may feel like a family memory today could become an invaluable piece of history tomorrow.
